The path of the ditches

The Roveto Valley, Castronovo, the water. An inextricable bond from the village's medieval origins to today, vital crystalline veins from the center of town ascend the mountain, accompanying us on a journey into the past. Here, time passes more slowly, ascending the ancient canals, vital arteries that promise life; sounds, smells, sensations, and voices from a distant past envelop us. Our eyes scan the dim light of the undergrowth, there the signs of our grandmothers' and grandfathers' passage in the vegetable gardens, still discernible between the dry stone walls, the dams, the infinite springs expertly tended by calloused hands, yes, but expert in enhancing even the smallest drops of this precious element. Today, thanks to centuries of work and care, they all flow together, beside us, along this enchanting path. The natural, ancestral need to stop and place our bare feet in the water, be caressed by it, forget the rush, and understand that it is a miracle not to be taken for granted, a rediscovered connection among the rocks. Rocks that tell of complex geological movements, other natural artists, shaping the large carbonate platforms that embrace the valley, bring forth from every corner those vigorous karst springs, full of plays of light. Green colors and reflections immersed in the forest that we strive to capture with our technological prowess, knowing full well, however, that emotions can only be captured in our memories. The Sentiero dei Foschi, a continuous and ever-new discovery, with its countless variations, waterfalls, wooden bridges, the expert work of restoration and care, offers everyone a glimpse of the history of our land, an unforgettable experience, a promise of return.

The route, winding around Castronovo from the parking area to Piazza Palazzo, highlights how water from springs and canals has influenced the town's development over time. Even without historical evidence, the dense network of man-made canals, certainly contemporary with the town's first settlements, has ensured its only true wealth for centuries. The trail offers a journey through history and nature along the paths that ancient water carriers used to carry the precious water into the town. In honor of this wealth, the village retains the unique characteristic of being entirely crossed by one of the branches of the Rio Sogno canal, a source of well-being and joy for all the children who always used it to play growing up among the alleys accompanied by its characteristic sound. Accessible year-round, the Sentiero dei Foschi is almost entirely shaded, with water accompanying us even in the driest seasons. Experienced divers can ascend the Stracciapanne ditch until late spring, where, after climbing a vertical wall with a 7-meter drop, they find themselves in a series of natural pools surprising in their variety and beauty.
